How we engrave into traffolyte type materials

Traffolyte is a material that dates back to the 1920s, and it has been a popular choice for labels and signage ever since.

Traffolyte is used for versatile and durable engraved signs and labels, and at Bex we are experts in creating truly eye-catching traffolyte designs.

What is traffolyte?

Traffolyte is a multi-layered phenolic plastic sheet that is suitable for engraving. As each layer is a different colour, engraved letters or patterns are a different colour to the unengraved sections, making it a good choice for signs and labels.

The name was previously a brand name for the material, derived from the location of the original manufacturers, Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Limited, who were based at Trafford Park in Manchester.

However, the company stopped manufacturing the material in the 1960s, and no trademark was ever filed, so traffolyte has now become the commonly used term.

What are the benefits of traffolyte?

One of the main benefits of traffolyte is that it is a perfect solution for clearly engraved signs or labels, thanks to the three differently coloured layers. Due to this feature, designs and text engraved into traffolyte won’t fade or rub off over time, no matter how often it’s cleaned.

It is therefore a highly durable material, and offers protection from UV and other environmental factors. It also doesn’t conduct electricity, making traffolyte labels a popular choice in the electrical industry.

It is a flexible and highly versatile material, and can be cut or engraved in a wide variety of styles and designs.

How can we engrave into traffolyte?

Due to the thickness of the top layer of traffolyte, traditional engraving techniques can produce mixed results, making it difficult to execute the correct weight of text in particular.

However, our Zünd and laser cutting machines are capable of cutting a wide range of materials of different weights and thicknesses.

Traffolyte is no exception, and the Zünd and laser machines produce stunning results with the material which can be cut and engraved in a wide variety of styles.

The Zünd system is essentially a computer-aided robotic cutting blade with an accuracy tolerance of +/-0.2mm.

Our Zünd machines are an example of how we continually invest in our technology to ensure we offer the best possible products at Bex. Contact us to find out more.
