What are Lexan polycarbonates?

Lexan (a trademarked name by GE Plastics) polycarbonate film is a high quality, tough, dimensionally stable and heat-resistant material ideally suited to a number of graphic and industrial applications.

It is available in a range of thicknesses with textured, polished or hard-coated surfaces. High clarity and ease of printing and finishing ensures that Lexan is the ideal solution for reverse printed graphics, overlays, nameplates, high performance labels and fascia panels etc.

“Lexan materials are all velvet flame retardant polycarbonate films, meaning they are an ideal solution for a range of industries. “

Benefits of Lexan polycarbonates

One of the major advantages of Lexan is that it is very strong, being almost unbreakable and much stronger than other transparent sheet materials of the same thickness. This makes it an ideal choice for backlit signage and panels, retail and point of sale displays.

The main properties of Lexan are:

  • Extreme durability
  • Good mechanical strength
  • High heat deflection temperature under load
  • High light transmission
  • Good weather and creep resistance
  • Low moisture absorption
  • Good dimensional stability
  • Good electrical insulating properties
  • Easily machined
  • Can be thermoformed
  • Self extinguishing
  • Good resistance to high energy radiation
  • Good optical clarity
  • Outstanding dimensional stability
  • Good printability without pre-treatment
  • Easy formability
  • Excellent die-cutability

An essential fire safety standard

All of the Lexan materials that we offer carry the UL94 V-0 fire safety rating. In industries such as rail, automotive and aerospace, where public safety is of the utmost importance, UL94 V-0 is an essential safety standard.

To achieve this rating, materials are put through the UL94 standard test for flammability of plastic materials for parts in devices and appliances. The test measures the self-extinguishing time of materials, and to receive the highest V-0 rating the material must extinguish in less than 10 seconds with no dripping.

That means that once a fire reaches the polycarbonate, the material would help to resist flames and the rate of spread will be very slow, particularly when compared to combustible materials. What’s more, polycarbonate produces very little smoke in the presence of fire.

Wide range of applications

Lexan polycarbonates are suitable for applications in electronics such as printed circuit boards and TV and monitor insulation, along with a wide range of uses such as panels and displays in buildings and transportation such as trains, aircraft and electric cars.

Other applications include:

  • Graphic overlays
  • Backlit signage and graphic displays
  • Point of sale and retail displays
  • Custom interior design panels
  • Floor graphics
  • High-performance labels and in-mould decoration

Printing onto Lexan polycarbonates

At Bex Design & Print we have extensive experience with both screen and digital printing onto Lexan polycarbonate film.

Screen printing represents the highest proportion of our work, but our digital work is growing rapidly as we are one of the very few companies in the UK who are able to offer high definition, full colour digital printing onto Lexan™ and other high performance polycarbonate films.

Our ability to do this is made possible by the fact that we were the first company in the UK to purchase the Jetrix LX5 LED UV printer, an investment which gives us unsurpassed capability and quality when printing digitally onto Lexan.
